For the past few months, it has been possible to experience the VR dementia simulation through Surplus. More than 100 family caregivers, volunteers, colleagues, and partners have already tried the game. Time and again, we hear the same feedback: “Now I have a better understanding of what someone with dementia might experience.”
It can be difficult to put yourself in the shoes of someone with dementia. What is it like when the world around you is perceived differently? When stimuli, sounds, and events are no longer taken for granted? During the VR dementia experience, you’ll spend about twenty minutes experiencing how someone with early-stage dementia might perceive the world. You’ll also, as it were, hear the thoughts that someone with dementia might have. This gives you greater insight into how dementia affects a person and why their behavior is sometimes different from what you’re used to.
The VR dementia experience shows that dementia goes far beyond mere forgetfulness. It is precisely by experiencing it firsthand that people often develop greater understanding, patience, and empathy when interacting with someone with dementia.
The VR dementia simulation is free, can be done individually or in a group, and is led by a trained staff member or volunteer from Mantelzorg Oosterhout.
Are you curious about the possibilities, or would you like to experience the VR dementia simulation for yourself? Or would you like to volunteer to help others have this experience? Feel free to contact us at mantelzorg.oosterhout@surplus.nl or 076 – 208 22 20.
