Would you like to care for a loved one and are considering a family care home? That will soon become easier. The government is working on a new law. That law will ensure that you can place an informal care home throughout the Netherlands under the same rules. Municipalities will no longer be allowed to make additional rules.
What will change?
The new law is called: Strengthening Public Housing Control. That law states that placing a sheltered housing unit must be possible in the same way in all municipalities. Now the rules are still different for each municipality. This sometimes causes confusion or delays.
With this new law comes more clarity and less hassle.
Why is this important for family caregivers?
An assisted living facility is a good solution if you care for your father, mother, partner or other family member. You then live close to each other, but separately. This makes caring easier. And it helps to maintain independence.
Currently, there are still municipalities where it is difficult to build a home for informal care. The new law changes that. Municipalities will soon no longer be allowed to impose additional requirements.
The family home
The new law also includes something else new: the family home. This is a home in the yard, for family members who want to live close together. For example, parents, children or a partner. There is no need for care yet. This means that you can also start living together in the meantime, without the need for informal care.
A family home may be built permit-free. This not only helps with the housing shortage, but also makes it easier to take care of each other later. So it is a good way to help each other now and in the future.
What can you do now?
The law is not yet final. The House of Representatives has already agreed to the new law; the law still has to go through the Senate. But you can already see what is possible in your municipality. We are happy to help you with that.
