Carer-friendly employment: good for your employees and your organization

More and more employees are combining their jobs with informal care. As an employer, you can make a difference by creating an environment where this is discussable and well regulated. With four simple steps you can take steps towards being a caring employer:

1. Discuss
Increase awareness among employees and managers. By actively drawing attention to the topic - for example with the Work & Care Monitor - you will gain insight into what is going on and where opportunities exist. How many employees are caregivers? Did you know that 18% of absenteeism in the Netherlands is related to informal care? 1 in 4 employees combine work and care; in the healthcare sector it is even 1 in 3. 40% discusses work and care with the employer. How is that in your organization? What is the culture around work-life balance?

2. Describe
Make sure everyone knows what arrangements, leave options and flexibility are offered from the collective bargaining agreement and organization. Clear information prevents stress and gives employees confidence.

3. Proficient
Support managers and employees in having open conversations about informal care. What causes strain? How are private phones handled in the workplace, or the flexibility required? A good conversation can take a lot of pressure off.

4. Secure
Keep attention to the combination of work and informal care structural and topical. For example, make it a permanent part of annual interviews with employees. That way it remains part of your organizational culture.
