Experience what it's like to have dementia, and volunteer to help others understand it

“I would so love to look inside the head of my partner, parent,” to better understand what is going on in the mind of someone with dementia. Experiencing gives understanding, and understanding is an important basis for effective coping. Therefore, together with Into D'mentia, we started a project where, in addition to the course Dementia and (n)you, you can experience as a neighbor or volunteer what it is like to have incipient dementia. With VR goggles, you can experience, with controllers in your hands, what it is like to have incipient dementia in 15 minutes. This experience helps to increase understanding and better coping with people with dementia.

Would you like to volunteer for a dementia-friendly Oosterhout?

What will you do?
We are deploying two VR glasses at different locations in Oosterhout. Family members, volunteers and other interested parties can use these to experience what it is like to have dementia. Because we intend to be able to connect better with the perception of someone with dementia, we conduct an after-party discussion afterwards. The experience may also evoke some emotions. For this we are looking for volunteers to guide participants. You will receive training and may experience the VR glasses yourself.

We are looking for volunteers with:

  • Good communication and conversation skills
  • Affinity with dementia
  • Affinity with VR / AI, some knowledge is a plus
  • Flexible and empathetic
  • Willing to work in different locations
  • Available for at least 6 half-days a year (by arrangement)

What do we offer?

  • Training and guidance
  • Being involved in an inspired and fun team of volunteers

Interested?
Mail to mantelzorg.oosterhout@surplus.nl And we'll schedule an introduction!

Together we make Oosterhout dementia-friendly!
