Summer has begun! Time for sun on your face, wind in your hair and hopefully: a little peace in your head. Because let's face it: as an informal caregiver you are always there for others. Especially in the summer, when regular care is less available and people go on vacation, it can be extra intensive. For this very reason: don't forget yourself. You too can enjoy yourself - and it doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. That is why we have compiled a list of simple and affordable summer tips for you. Little things that help you recharge, relax or try something new.
Summer tips for a moment to yourself:
- Transform your garden into a camping spot
With all the hustle and bustle and worry, you can also camp out for a night in the garden, or arrange for (grand)children to sleep here. Sleep outside for a night, make a fire, roast marshmallows or water balloon fight - just at home, but still get away from it all. - Picnicking with a good book or fine friend
A park, the cadet camp in Teteringen or forestry Dorst are perfect places. Bring a rug, some goodies and you're out and about. - Walk, draw, paint or photograph in nature
No experience necessary, just curiosity! Challenge yourself and make it a challenge for yourself, or with a friend. You can review these together afterwards with a cool drink: “who will photograph the most beautiful flower” or “take an object from home and photograph it in a funny place in nature or city”.” - Trade a book, magazine or puzzle
A fresh perspective in the form of a new story. Swap something with a neighbor or acquaintance, or stop in at activity center The Locks for a book from our closet. - Plan mini breaks in your week
Five minutes of silence on your balcony, your feet in a cold bath, or just making something nice for yourself. Literally put it in your calendar. - Share the care - you are not alone
Especially during the vacation season, caregiving may make more demands on your presence or help as a family caregiver. You don't have to do it alone. Ask someone to take over for an evening or part of the day - even one hour makes a difference. Surplus is there for you: our volunteers are happy to offer a sounding board, with practical help, or just a listening ear. It really helps to bear it together. - Organize a mini high tea or get-together
Let everyone bring something and enjoy it! Even if it's only an hour - connection does good. - Visit a free activity or performance near you
Treat yourself to an afternoon of fun. You can often find all kinds of events during the summer - low-key and fun. - Explore a different environment (no matter how close)
A different route to the supermarket, a tour of an unfamiliar neighborhood or a visit to a garden farm can be surprisingly refreshing.
Happy summer!
